Using groups in studentcentral

WGroups-icon.jpghat are studentcentral Groups?

In studentcentral there are five types of Groups that can be set up. The tool allows Instructors to organise students into groups of any size. Instructors can provide communication and collaboration tools that only group members can access.

Groups can be created one at a time or in sets. Groups can be designated as Self-Enrol – allowing students to add themselves to a group, or Manual Enroll – allowing the Instructor to assign students to a group.

Before creating groups think about the following:

  • How many groups do I need? Single or a Set of Groups?
  • How do I want to manage the enrolment of the groups? Do I want the students to choose which group or do I need to manage the enrolment?
  • What are the groups being used for? Communication? Assessment Management? Collaboration?
  • What tools do I need to make available for them?
  • Would smart views be useful to me?

How do they work?

An instructor simply selects the type of group they wish to use and then creates it, or in the case of random groups, the computer does that for you. See the bottom of this page for examples.

Benefits

Once created each Group has its own space in the study area to work together. The Instructor can enable an assortment of tools to help students collaborate. Among other things, groups can be used for:
  • email purposes
  • in Adaptive Release rules (ensuring certain students see different things from others)
  • Group Assessments (one student can submit a file, but grades/feedback can be issued efficiently to all group members)
  • group project work
  • group blogs and wikis
  • file exchange areas.

Limitations

Groups may take a bit of time to set up initially but once created they have many benefits.

Examples

I require a particular number of groups and/or group size, but want the students to organise themselves
  • This is one of the most efficient ways of administrating groups on studentcentral.
  • Create a Group Set with the Self Enrol Option. You can define the number of groups and/or the max. number of students per group
  • Once complete the system will create the required number of groups.
  • Then add a link to the groups tool somewhere relevant in your module. It is this link the students will need to click to access the list of groups they can 'sign up' to.
  • Tutors can still manually add students and move students if required.

I want the system to create multiple groups with random allocation of students

  • Create a Group Set with the Random Enrol Option. You can define the number of groups OR the max. number of students per group
  • Once complete the system will create the required number of groups, and randomly allocate student enrolments.
  • Tutors can still manually add students and move students if required.

I want to create multiple groups but I wish to manually enrol the students

  • Create a Group Set with the Manual Enrol Option. You can define the number of groups you wish to create
  • Once complete the system will create the required number of groups.
  • Tutors can still manually add students and move students if required.
