​Working from home

Listed below are just some of the IT services available to staff who work from home.

All staff who work from home must read and abide by the Remote Working section of the University's IT Regulations to ensure that they comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The University's IT Regulations state that you must have up to date anti-virus software on any computer used to connect to university services (including Macs).

You can also download MS Office on your home computer for free.


 Look after yourself


​Read the guidelines for using Display Screen Equipment to ensure that your workstation at home is set up correctly.


 Secure Remote Access

If you are working off-campus, some central admin systems such as eFin, SITS and Infoview can only be accessed via the Secure Remote Access service.
If you are likely to need to use these services, you should apply to Set up a Secure Remote Access account in advance so that you can connect from home.

All eLearning software is available off-campus, including:

We recommend that you use Firefox to access all eLearning software from home.


 Library services

Visit the online library to:
  • manage your library account
  • make reservations
  • browse eBooks and eJournals

Manage your reading lists using Aspire.


 Email and calendar


 Skype for Business

Skype image
Set up Skype for Business in advance so that you can make video and audio calls, and share content on screen.
You will need a microphone (either in or connected to) your computer to be able to use Skype for Business.
Skype for Business should not be used as a replacement for in-person teaching, unless you have organised this with your class at least a week in advance.

To check your voicemail:
  • call 01273 641400
  • follow the instructions.

 IT Service Desk


​Visit the IT Service Desk page for service updates and details of how to contact them for support when working from home.

This service does not offer support for fixing home computers.


 Accessing your files from home

You will not be able to access any files stored on the hard drive of your staff desktop computer or on local network drives from home.

  • check building closures and IT service updates
  • find quick links to access MyView and staffmail
  • access committee sites

 My View


Use the HR My View system to

  • check pay slips
  • book annual leave
  • record sickness absence



 Other web-based services


​All web-based services can be accessed from home, just as you would access them on-campus. These include (but are not limited to):

​The following services can not be accessed off-campus:

  • Estates and Facilities PlanOn system
  • Your school or department's local network drive, if you have one.
