Marking submissions with the Turnitin app

As well as marking papers online on your desktop computer or laptop, you can do your marking using the Turnitin Feedback Studio app for iPad. The app also allows you to download student submissions and then mark them offline, without an active Wi-Fi connection.

The app is for instructor use only when Turnitin is accessed via integration (via studentcentral/Blackboard in our case), the student app which is also publicised in the iTunes app store is only available if Turnitin is used directly through their main website. The app is only available for iOS devices at this time.

Please Note:

The Turnitin Feedback Studio app is partially supported by Information Services. However, as a facet of its operation as app it is updated frequently which can lead to instability during marking periods. We advise updating the app immediately prior to marking periods and then avoid further updates until marking is complete.

Also because it is an 'app' and not fully functional software, when there are problems there is a limit to the troubleshooting and error resolution which can take place if things do go wrong. This is particularly important to bear in mind if you are marking submissions offline as if there is a problem with synchronisation between the iPad and your Turnitin account there may be no way to rectify the issue. We advise that you synchronise your marking early and often.

It is also important to make sure that you do not have submissions open in the app, while you have the same submissions actively open in the version of Turnitin used in studentcentral via a web browser. You cannot mark in both versions of Turnitin at the same time; this has can lead to synchronisation issues.

Install the app

Adding Modules to the Feedback Studio app

We recommend adding individual modules to the Turnitin app, which allows for a managable list. With this method, there is no need to sign in to the app.

Always ensure you have synced any recent marking and updated the app before adding any new modules.

Using your iPad browser

  1. On your iPad browser, access the studentcentral module you wish to add to the app. Go to Control Panel > Course Tools > Turnitin Assignments and access a submission point with at least one student submission
  2. Open a student paper and click on the i symbol on the right side of the student paper.
  3. Tap Add Class
  4. You will be prompted to switch to the Turnitin app. The individual module will now be added to the app.

Using a PC/Mac browser (if the above method does not work)
  1. On a PC/Mac browser, access the studentcentral module you wish to add to the app. Go to Control Panel > Course Tools > Turnitin Assignments and access a submission point with at least one student submission
  2. Open a student paper and click on the i symbol on the right side of the student paper.
  3. You will see an option to enter your email address to recieve a 'unique code'. Please enter your university email address and click email me
  4. On your iOS device, access your email from Turnitin and tap 'Add Class'
  5. You will be prompted to switch to the Turnitin app. The module will be added to the app.

Alternative Option - Sign in to the Turnitin app

*This option allows you to see all your modules within the app. This can be difficult as you will see all modules you are enrolled as an insgtrcutor, included previous years instances.
  • When you open the app you will be asked to log in. This is not your university login but your instructor account for Turnitin, which you may not have used before. Your username is your university email address, in name format: e.g. a.person@brighton.ac.uk
  • If you need to reset your Turnitin-specific password. Please visit this page for further instructions.
  • When you have logged into the app you should find that all the modules that for which you are an instructor are listed on the main page in the app.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

I’m worried about capacity on my iPad, now all my modules are listed, won’t my iPad be full?
  • Although the modules are visible, the submissions are not automatically downloaded to your device unless you actively select them within the app. Therefore your iPad’s storage will not be impacted.

I have too many modules listed in the app and I am having trouble finding the relevant ones, is there anything I can do?

  • There is a search box within the app that allows you to search for a specific module.
  • You can remove old modules in bulk using our module removal tool. You can access the tool here (university login credentials required).
