Borrowing

Allowances, renewing, autorenewals, returning, fines

Allowances
University of Brighton students and staff can borrow 99 items from any of our five libraries using their Unicard, (except those on short and pre-sessional courses who can borrow 12 items).

Please check your library account regularly so that you know when your books should be returned.

Renewing
Ensure that items are renewed or returned on time to avoid fines. You can renew items up to 99 times (not Desk Loan items) as long as they have not been reserved and your course is not due to finish or has finished.

Items can be renewed:
Any items not renewed must be returned by the date they are due back. If you have overdue items you may not be able to renew any other items, please contact your campus library about this as soon as possible.

If there are extenuating circumstances that prevent you from returning an item please contact your campus library.

Autorenewals
Items on loan to you automatically renew provided they have not been reserved and your library account is not about to expire. However it still remains your responsibility to check your library account regularly. Please check your university emails frequently as you will be sent an email to let you know which items have and which have not been auto-renewed.

Desk loans, laptop loans, interlibrary loans and media equipment will not automatically renew and must be returned by the date/time they are due back.

Returning
Books can be returned to any of the University of Brighton libraries, with the exception of desk loan and interlibrary loan items which must be returned to the Help Desk of the library they were borrowed from.

You can return items by post to the site library address but they remain your responsibility until received in the library and discharged from your account.

Fines
You will be charged a fine of 50p per day if you're late bringing back a library item that someone else wants. Desk loan items are charged at a rate of £1 per hour or part hour up to a maximum of £10. Late return of a laptop is charged at £1 per half hour up to a maximum of £20.

Leaving
When you leave the university you will need to return all loans and pay any outstanding fines. Alumni can apply for 1 year's free external membership.

Useful tips
  • If there are multiple copies of a reserved item and someone else returns a copy before you, then you can renew your copy via your My Account
  • Returning an item that somone has reserved but still need it? Return it and then reserve it and you will be notified when it is available to borrow again.
  • Are there books on loan that you need? Please do reserve them.
