The Telecommunications department falls under the remit of IT Services and, as such, provides the university with all its telephony requirements, encompassing both fixed line and mobile communications.
The Telecoms team is responsible for the development, maintenance and operation of the entire University of Brighton telephone system as well as the provision of mobile and fixed telephones. This is a large and complex telephone system supporting the business needs of a demanding organisation.
Key activities of this team include:
- telephone switch management and operations
- telephone equipment installation, monitoring and management
- installation and maintenance of telephone lines
- provision of mobile and fixed line telephony
- telephone directory services
- switchboard operator services.
The university operates an Aastra MD110 PABX, a type of telephone network which is distributed across our five main sites and linked to a main group switch by leased lines and fibre optic cables. We have in the region of over 2800 extensions and over 100 incoming lines including Direct Dialling In (DDI) capability.
Telecoms are a small but perfectly formed team based in Watts Building and we facilitate all telephony requirements throughout the university. We also provide a welcoming voice and professional service to callers to the university by way of our switchboard team.
Advice on the use of telephones and related equipment, for example faxes, answering machines, pagers, and mobile telephones, is available through the Telephone Systems Manager’s office who should be contacted before any purchases of equipment are made. Advice can be offered on compatibility with current university systems, approval of new equipment, and on other technical considerations and costs.
